Born in Brooklyn, Professor Vincent Del Castillo attended public schools after which he served in the military where he attained the rank of sergeant. He began his police career in the New York City Transit Police Department in 1963 and worked his way through the ranks to Chief of the Department gaining a wealth of experience in virtually every aspect of policing. While a member of the Transit Police, he attended the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s National Executive Institute, earned a BS in Labor Studies from Empire State College, an M A in Public Administration from John Jay College of Criminal Justice and a PhD from Fordham University where he was inducted into the Phi Kappa Phi National Honor Society. Professor Del Castillo joined the faculty of John Jay College of Criminal Justice in 1990 and served as a member of the Department of Law and Police Science. From 1994 to 1996 Professor Del Castillo assisted in the creation of a branch campus of John Jay College within the Police Academy of the Puerto Rico Police Department and was appointed Dean of Academic Affairs responsible for a faculty of over eighty professors. He has published several articles and book chapters on law enforcement, fear of crime and victimization. When not teaching or writing he can be found sailing in the waters off Long Island.
