Professor Denise D P Thompson is the Director of the MPA in Inspection and Oversight and is an associate professor in the Department of Public Management, John Jay College, CUNY. She is a development studies scholar who has a Ph.D. in Public Administration. She has researched and published on disaster risk management, governance, and public policy issues related to disaster risk reduction issues affecting small island developing states (SIDS).
Since joining John Jay College of Criminal Justice, CUNY, in 2010, Professor Thompson has researched and published on public policy, disaster risk governance, disaster logistics and humanitarian response, disaster resilience, and sustainable development. She has conducted research on and policy work for several notable agencies, including the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), International Labor Organization (ILO), Caribbean Disaster and Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA), Environmental Solutions Limited (ESL)
Professor Thompson also teaches courses in public policy, organization management and leadership, and emergency management at the graduate and undergraduate levels. The Online version of Organization Theory and Management is among the courses she has developed.
Professor Thompson is committed to improving students’ learning outcomes and assessments at the college and departmental levels. She has completely revamped the undergraduate Criminal Justice Management program that NY State later approved. In their accreditation mission, she also works as a site visitor for the National Association of Schools of Public Affairs and Administration (NASPAA). She has been selected (several years) as the faculty that most contributed to their academic success at John Jay College of Criminal Justice by students on the Dean’s List.
Professor Thompson has served on several committees and boards, including the Advisory Board of the International Journal of Disaster Risk Science (IJDRS), Disaster Prevention and Resilience (DPR), and the Crisis Response Journal (CRJ), a practitioner-focused journal on crisis, disaster and security management. She is currently a board member for the American Society for Public Administration section on Emergency and Crisis Management and the NASPAA section on Emergency Management and Homeland Security. Professor Thompson also serves as a Subject Matter Expert in Emergency Management and Homeland Security at Thomas Edison State University, NJ.
Professor Thompson is the recipient of several awards including the Jeremy Collymore Award (inaugural winner) for Research in Humanitarian Response and Disaster Risk Management in the Caribbean. Denise Thompson is an Associate Professor in the Department of Public Management at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, the City University of New York, USA. She is a subject matter expert in disaster risk reduction and management and public policy and consults in these areas. She brings over a decade and a half of research and publications on small island developing states, disaster risk governance, disaster resilience and sustainability, climate change and the built environment, disaster supply chain management, logistics in humanitarian operations. She has made an impact in the areas of program development and evaluation, program accreditation, student learning outcomes assessment, strategic planning and curricular development. Dr. Thompson is also the director of the MPA Inspection and Oversight program at John Jay College working to advance accountability, integrity and oversight in government, non for profit and related oversight agencies by equipping current and future public servants with the knowledge, skills, and leadership experiences necessary to excel in these functions. She is also a motivated and engaging public management professor driven to excellence in teaching and in motivating students to achieve academic and personal success. She has mentored dozens of graduate students to advocacy and further studies in the public service.
